So this not-so-new thing – gel nails, have been a trend these days. However, I was not going to shell out $65 for a mani. (price sourced from an expensive salon to begin with so it’s probably cheap elsewhere) According to my boyfriend’s sister, she can get a Shellac manicure for $15 in her neighbourhood. Erm, that’s far! Anyway, I decided to buy my own supplies to do it myself.
To begin, I didn’t know where to start, so I just looked at the basic kit and worked from there. I was not going to fork over $80 for a gel curing lamp. Hell naw. SO obviously I went the ebay route. Hur hur. I got a pink one, super cute, for $20. Hell, they even have them for $10 on ebay. But they’re more squarish and not so cute. Then I knew I needed some sort of starter kit that included base coat, top coat, remover, etc. I found one for $15. It included some files and other stuff too. Unnecessary. Didn’t touch them. Then I thought, of course, I’m going to need some colours so I bought a gel set, again, from ebay, for $15. I also bought some brushes for $3. Total spent $53. It’s already less than the mani mentioned above!
So to recap, here’s what you need:
+ UV lamp
+ Base coat
+ Gel colour
+ Top coat
+ Gel remover
I will go into detail next time I do my gel nails with colour but for now, bare with me.
First you paint your nails with the basecoat, then put your hand under the lamp. (There’s a timer on my $20 lamp so, I say 1-2 mins)
Paint your nails with colour, then put it under the lamp.
Paint your nails with top coat, then put your hand under the lamp.
And you are done!
So these are the gel polishes you actually have to have a separate paintbrush for. It can get a little messy but if you get any gel on your hands, just wipe it off using regular nailpolish remover.
For my convenience, I just bought some gel polish from ebay. They are of the gelish variety and they look just like regular nailpolish so this should be much easier!
This should last 2+ weeks. After putting the topcoat on, you can definitely see the shine and the fact that it’s hard! I would try scratching it with a key (like the Shellac commercial) but I’m a little paranoid about that.
A full tutorial type thing will be posted when I get my gelish. 🙂
Here they are! This is my first time applying it so it’s not perfect.
Oh you need some cuticle oil and stuff too. Whatever LOL. I’m not a manicurist.
So how long does it take? I guess it depends. It dries instantly so… maybe give yourself 45 minutes the first time around just to familiarize yourself with everything. Once you get the hang of it, and you actually have those gel bottles (Click here for the colour swatches, omg cuteness) it will be so much faster. I recently bought Seafoam, Need a tan, and Passion. This is such a cool thing for when you travel and you don’t have to worry about dinging your nails into luggage or corners or whatever.
Removing this, on the other hand…. LOL wish me good luck(Charlie).
